The interim government will take initiatives to implement the reform proposals received from the Media Reform Commission that are immediately implementable, said Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The Chief Advisor made these remarks while handing over the report of the Media Reform Commission at the State Guest House Jamuna on Saturday (March 22).

“We want to implement the reform proposals that are immediately implementable. For that, I would like the Reform Commission to submit to us the recommendations that need to be done immediately or can be implemented quickly,” said the Chief Advisor.

Terming this work of the Media Reform Commission led by senior journalist Kamal Ahmed as invaluable, he suggested working towards making this report accessible to other people, including students of journalism departments of universities,

After receiving information from the commission that Bangladeshi television channels cannot be viewed from abroad because domestic television channels are forced to use a specific satellite, the chief advisor said, "The government will take necessary measures so that Bangladeshis living abroad and interested foreigners can watch Bangladeshi television channels."

Police have arrested an Indian national on charges of attempted rape of a 9-year-old child in Cumilla.

The incident took place on Thursday (March 20) morning at Mustafa's rented house in Raipur Singula village of Elliotganj (North) union of Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla. Officer-in-Charge of Daudkandi police station Md. Junaid Chowdhury confirmed the arrest.

The arrested Indian national has been identified as Tajinder Singh (50). He is the son of Pal Singh of Basipathana village in Chandigarh district of Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Tajinder has been working as an engineer in a factory of Agro Ambus Limited in Mohammadpur area of Daudkandi upazila for a long time.

Police said that the accused Indian Tajinder Singh has been working as an engineer in a factory named Agro Ambus Limited in Mohammadpur area of Daudkandi upazila for a long time. On that occasion, Mustafa of Singula village used to live in a rented house in 'Ma Manzil'. On Thursday morning, Tajinder dragged the child to his room on the pretext of giving him chocolate. He took him to the room and touched his sensitive area. Another child saw the matter and informed his mother. On hearing the screams of the child's mother, the people around came forward and caught the accused Tajinder Singh.

Officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Police Station Md. Junaid Chowdhury said that when he tried to rape her, the local residents beat Tajinder Singh and handed him over to the police. First, he was given primary treatment at the Gouripur Upazila Health Complex and brought to the police station. The victim's family has filed a case under the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act. Accordingly, he has been sent to jail through the court.

With Eid-ul-Fitr ahead, the pace of remittances or expatriate income has increased. In the 19 days of the current (March) month, expatriates have sent remittance of 225 crore dollars in 19 days. In Bangladeshi currency (122 taka per dollar) which amounts to more than 27,474 crore taka.

In these 19 days, an average of about 12 crore dollars or 1,464 crore taka has been received daily. If this trend continues, a new record may be created in expatriate income in March.

After the political change in the country in August last year, the pace of expatriate income started increasing continuously. The highest remittance in the country's history (about 264 crore dollars) was received in December of the current (2024-25) fiscal year. The second highest remittance came in February (about 253 crore dollars).

A senior official of the relevant department of the central bank told a web portal that money laundering has decreased after the interim government took office. At the same time, the violence of hundi traders has also decreased. On the other hand, the dollar price of remittances is available in banks like in the open market. For these reasons, expatriates are showing interest in sending remittances through legal channels. In addition, the remittance flow has increased further around the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

The total remittance received in the eight months (July-February) of the current (2024-25) fiscal year was 1849 crore dollars. In the first eight months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, 1494 crore dollars came. Accordingly, remittances in the current fiscal year have increased by 355 crore dollars compared to the same period of the last fiscal year.

Earlier, the highest remittance of 264 crore dollars in a single month in the country's history was received in December last year. With this, remittances have crossed two billion dollars for eight consecutive months since August, the second month of the fiscal year.

It was not possible to impose a fine as the owner of the hotel could not be found during the drive.

In addition, the connection source point of the illegal distribution line of 500 residential stoves in the port area was killed and capped. During this, a fine of Tk. 50,000 was collected from the illegal residential customers.
