The Awami League will not be banned, said the chief adviser to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He said, there is no plan to ban the Awami League. However, those of the party involved in crimes against humanity will be tried.
He said these things at a meeting of Comfort Iro, President and CEO of the International Crisis Group, on Thursday (March 20).
Regarding the election deadline, he said, two deadlines have been fixed for the election. This deadline will not change. If the political parties want limited reforms before the election, the election will be held in December. If they want a larger reform package, the election will be held by June next year.
Regarding the UN report, the chief adviser said, in view of the report of the UN fact-finding mission on the crimes of the July mass uprising, the government has not ruled out the possibility of sending Awami League leaders to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. He said that the matter is under discussion.
International Crisis Group officials praised the arrest of Rohingya rebel leader Ataullah this week, calling it a sign of the interim government's commitment to peace and stability in the refugee camps.
The chief adviser noted that Dhaka is working to mobilize aid for Rohingya refugees. He hopes that the upcoming UN special conference will draw the world's attention to the Rohingya crisis.
