A joint force raid in Tongi's Haji Mazar slum in the industrial city of Gazipur has arrested more than 50 criminals involved in various crimes, including robbers and drug dealers. Drugs, various equipment and indigenous weapons were recovered during the raid.
The raid began on Saturday (March 1) after 7 pm at the Haji Mazar slum adjacent to the Bishwa Ijtema Maidan on the banks of the Turag River under Tongi West Police Station. The raid ended at 9 pm. A large number of members of the army, RAB, BGB and police took part in the raid.
In an operation conducted by the joint forces to prevent robbery, drug and terrorist activities, various houses in Tongi's Mazar slum were searched and various items used for drug consumption were recovered. During this, more than 50 criminals involved in various crimes were arrested.
At a press conference after the operation, Gazipur Executive Magistrate Md. Raihanul Islam said, "The operation includes members of the army, police and RAB along with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). There are also allegations that people from the Mazar slum are involved in kidnapping and robbery. As many as 60 drug dealers and various identified terrorists have already been arrested."
Drugs and money have also been recovered. He also mentioned that such operations will continue throughout the month of Ramadan.
Law enforcement agencies said that the joint force operation was conducted to improve the law and order situation as Uttara, the industrial area of the capital, and Tongi have become a crime-prone area. Further action will be taken against those arrested in the operation as per the law.
Locals said that drug trafficking and kidnapping have been going on openly in the slum for a long time. Although the matter was reported to the local police station many times, the police did not take any action. Not only is there a system for selling drugs, there is also a system for consuming drugs in small rooms of the slum. Drug dealers, robbers and terrorists have established hideouts here.
