Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, our border is fully secured. There is no problem here. However, the Bangladesh-Myanmar border is occupied by the Arakan Army. Who will it be in the future? It is difficult to say whether it is Myanmar or the Arakan Army. That is why the BGB is maintaining relations and communication with both sides.
On Saturday (March 1) afternoon, the newly raised Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB) was officially inaugurated by hoisting the flag at the training ground of the BGB's Cox's Bazar Battalion (34 BGB). He said this in response to questions from journalists after the inauguration.
The Home Affairs Adviser said, 4 more battalions were added to the 64 BGB battalion. This has increased the capacity of the BGB somewhat. We are trying to increase it further because our BGB's capacity needs to be increased further compared to neighboring countries.
He said, the most drugs come through this area. The Rohingya problem remains, this new battalion was very necessary here to stop drug smuggling. I hope it will play an important role. If necessary, we will do it in the future. Still, we will ensure security on the border and that people live in peace.
People on the border are in panic. There has been panic about the Arakan Army on the security issue on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. When asked about this, the Home Affairs Advisor said, there is really a problem here. Because Myanmar is another country. But the Bangladesh-India border is occupied by the Arakan Army. Who will it be in the future? Myanmar or the Arakan Army, it is difficult to say, we do not even know officially. So we have to maintain good relations with both sides. For security on the border.
However, the Home Affairs Adviser claimed, our border is fully secured. There is no problem here.
However, citing the Rohingya and drugs as problems, the Home Affairs Adviser said, "Despite the restrictions, around 60,000 Rohingya have entered again. Many times, it is not possible for humanitarian reasons. There is also pressure from foreigners to keep them, not to send them back. That is why we have also asked them to increase their assistance. And it is also true that those who have taken refuge in Bangladesh have been stuck in one place for a long time." He also said that the government is quite vigilant and aware of this matter. For this, the Adviser of equal rank, Khalilur Rahman, is performing his duties. He is also trying, negotiations are underway. Hopefully, both problems will be resolved. Our border is very safe. A small problem exists at all borders. The Home Affairs Adviser said, the most important thing was given to stopping border killings in the border conference held a few days ago at the level of BGB and BSF Director Generals. Even then, incidents like border killings are happening. We are trying to reduce it since it is not completely in our hands because they are using the weapons. I cannot officially say what you want.
Earlier, at the flag hoisting ceremony of the newly formed Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), Station Headquarters, Dhaka, Guard Police Battalion, Dhaka and K-Nine Unit and Training Center, the Home Affairs Adviser said, Border Guard Bangladesh is a 229-year-old traditional border guard force. This force has a very glorious and rich history. The brave and important role of this force in our great liberation war is very commendable. The brave pioneering role of the Border Guard during the liberation war has given courage and inspiration to the freedom-loving Bengalis.
Respectfully remembering the BGB members who sacrificed their lives in the liberation war and all the martyrs who were killed in the anti-discrimination student-public movement organized in July-August 2024, the Home Affairs Adviser said, the important and great responsibility of protecting the country's borders lies with Border Guard Bangladesh. Every member of the BGB is committed to properly performing any other duties assigned by the government, including maintaining border security, preventing crimes related to smuggling, women and children and drug trafficking, and assisting the administration in maintaining internal law and order.
‘I hope that the members of the newly formed Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), Station Headquarters, Dhaka, Guard Police Battalion, Dhaka and K-Nine Unit and Training Center, Gazipur will contribute to enhancing the reputation and dignity of the force by performing the duties assigned to them with utmost devotion. Today, 4 new units were established in the BGB by hoisting the flag under the BGB reorganization. I am proud to be associated with all these groundbreaking development activities of the BGB with the direct support of the current government of new Bangladesh.
I hope that all the officers, junior commissioned officers, members of various ranks and soldiers and civilian employees of the newly created Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), Station Headquarters, Dhaka, Guard Police Battalion, Dhaka and K-Nine Unit and Training Center, Gazipur, including all concerned, will demonstrate patriotism and dedication in performing their respective duties. I believe that these new units will make a special contribution to increasing the dynamics of the work of the BGB. He said, "Especially in the Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), the proportional inconsistency of our battalion BOP with the battalions and BOPs of the border guard forces of the neighboring countries on the border will be reduced to some extent, so you will be able to patrol and monitor the country's borders better." In addition, the Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB) will be able to play an effective role in preventing Rohingya infiltration and drug aggression in the border upazilas of Teknaf and Ukhia of Cox's Bazar district.
It is quite natural that as a new unit, you will have to face some limitations and fulfill your responsibilities. You will have to fulfill your responsibilities by accepting this temporary difficulty in the larger interest of the force and the country. Remember that as a member of a paramilitary force, everyone has to play a responsible role in achieving the success of the force in any adversity.
I want to assure you that efforts will be made to resolve the limitations of the new unit as soon as possible. With everyone's hard work and relentless efforts, we will overcome all kinds of limitations and adversities and play a supportive role in the progress of the new Bangladesh by moving forward. I believe that with the combined efforts of all of you, these new units will soon be able to establish themselves as efficient and ideal units.
He called for further enhancing the reputation and dignity of the BGB by carrying out any responsibility assigned by the government in a disciplined manner, including protecting the border, preventing smuggling, preventing the trafficking of women and children, suppressing any kind of border crime, and protecting the lives and property of the public.
