Earlier, the then Awami League government had decided to withdraw Ziaur Rahman's Independence Award in 2016. Later, his award medal and certificate of honor were removed from the National Museum.

Regarding the decision taken during the tenure of the Awami League government, the notification said that the government cancelled the Independence Award (posthumous) given to martyred President Ziaur Rahman in 2003 in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's verdict in 2016, and since there was no instruction to cancel the Independence Award given to him in that verdict, the government has revoked this decision to cancel his Independence Award considering his extraordinary contribution in the great liberation war.
