'Knowing about anti-Hasina movement, India failed to intervene'

India was aware of the anger building among the people of Bangladesh against Sheikh Hasina and the strong protests against her among the general public, but failed to intervene, said the country's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar.

Jaishankar told the country's Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Foreign Affairs on Saturday (March 22), The Hindu reported.

The report said that India, like other stakeholders, was aware of the turbulent situation inside Bangladesh. Referring to recent comments by UN human rights chief Volker Turk in this regard, Jaishankar said that the UN had warned the Bangladesh army against clashing with unarmed protesters during the anti-Hasina protests, saying that such a move would prompt the UN to ban the army from peacekeeping operations.
