Fuel oil prices increased, effective from Saturday

The prices of diesel and kerosene have been increased by one taka per liter to Tk. 105, while the prices of octane and petrol have been increased by one taka to Tk. 126 and Tk. 122 respectively. The new prices will be effective from tomorrow, Saturday (February 1).

A notification in this regard was published on Friday (January 31).

The new prices have been fixed by an executive order in accordance with the decrease/increase in fuel oil prices in the world market in an automatic manner.

Earlier in December, the prices of diesel and kerosene oil were reduced by Tk. 1 per liter to Tk. 104. At that time, octane Tk. 125 and petrol were kept unchanged at Tk. 121.

বিজ্ঞাপন

The government decided to get out of subsidizing the price of fuel oil. There is also pressure from the IMF.

The “Automatic Pricing Guidelines for Fuel Oil” notification was published on the night of February 29. According to that formula, prices are to be adjusted with the international market every month. According to the gazette, the commission of BPC and others will remain unchanged; only the import price will vary more or less every month.

Since octane and petrol are used in large quantities in private vehicles, their price is always kept higher than diesel as a luxury item. According to the formula, while determining the price of octane, the ‘α’ factor will be considered in the pricing formula so that the difference with diesel is at least Tk. 10 per liter.

And the unprecedented price increase was made on the night of August 5, 2022. The order issued by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) increased the price of diesel and kerosene by Tk. 34 per liter and petrol and octane by Tk. 46. At that time, the price of diesel and kerosene was fixed at Tk. 114 per liter, petrol at Tk. 135 and octane at Tk. 135. After that price increase, the fare of public transport increased by a maximum of 22 percent. Previously, in November 2021, the price of diesel and kerosene per liter was increased from Tk. 65 to Tk. 80. At that time, transportation fares were also increased by about 27 percent.
