A gold merchant was robbed of his gold ornaments in front of his wife in Ashulia, Savar, while they were closing his shop and returning home. Police and army members visited the scene after receiving information.
The incident took place in the Nayarhat Bazar area of Ashulia around 8:30 pm on Sunday (March 9).
The businessman was rescued in serious condition and taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for treatment, where he died around 10:45 pm.
The deceased businessman is Dilip Das (47). He is the son of Dayal Chandra Das of Gopinathpur area of Pathalia Union in Ashulia and the owner of Dilip Swarnalay in Nayarhat Bazar area of Ashulia.
The deceased's cousin Khokon Sarkar said that like every day, he (Dilip Das) was preparing to close his shop and go home around 8:30 pm today. His wife was also with him at the time. While he was closing the shutter of the shop, three miscreants pulled the gold bag from his neck. Unable to take the bag, the miscreants hacked Dilip with a machete and snatched the gold bag from him and quickly left the scene.
The deceased's wife, Sarasati Das, said that he was closing the shop to go home. I was with him. At that time, someone from behind pulled his gold bag. There were three of them, all of them young. Unable to take the bag on the first attempt, they hacked Dilip with a machete and snatched the bag he was carrying. Later, when we started screaming, the miscreants burst two cocktails and fled the scene.
She said, "There was about 20 to 25 bhari of gold in the bag. There was also cash." Although she could not immediately say how much cash was in the bag.
Enam Medical College Hospital's Emergency Medical Officer Merajur Rehan Pavel said, "He was brought to our hospital at around 10:30 pm. He had deep stab wounds on his chest, face and back. We started treatment, but he died while undergoing treatment."
Enam Medical College Hospital's Duty Manager Sabbir said, "Dilip was brought to our hospital at around 10:30 pm in a serious condition, and died while undergoing treatment at around 10:45 pm."
Ashulia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Kamal Hossain, who was at the scene at night, said, "In the CCTV footage, we saw that when Dilip was leaving the shop after closing the door, four people hit Dilip from behind. Later, when he turned around, he was hit again. Later, the miscreants ran away from the scene with a bag belonging to Dilip. The footage showed smoke, possibly because they exploded a cocktail while escaping." We, including the DB, Dhaka District Police, are already working seriously on the issue, and work is underway to bring the criminals under the law.
