BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has commented that the expectation of the democracy-loving people is that the interim government will prioritize elections.
He said this while virtually joining the Iftar Mahfil organized by BNP at the Ladies Club in the capital on Wednesday (March 19) evening. The party organized this iftar in honor of various political parties and prominent figures.
Tarique Rahman said that the interim government will prioritize elections with the aim of establishing a democratic government that is accountable to the people's votes, along with ensuring public safety.
He said that the term of a government in a state is fixed. But the political policy or political management of the country is long-term. Therefore, it is very important to ensure the political and economic power of the people to keep the political process strong and sustainable. The people, who have been powerless for a long decade and a half, are now ready to exercise their right to vote and establish a government and realize their rights.
The BNP acting chairman said, "BNP has set the goal of successfully repairing the state and politics through an elected national government to establish a non-discriminatory, safe, democratic, humane Bangladesh for the present and future generations. To fulfill that goal, if the BNP gets the responsibility of running the state in the upcoming national elections, the people's verdict will form a national government consisting of representatives of pro-democracy political parties and elected public representatives, which we have committed to the nation in the past as well."
He said, "The pro-democracy political parties call on all levels of leaders, activists and supporters, and the pro-democracy people. The conspiracy against unity that was formed on the streets stained with the blood of thousands of martyrs in the mass uprising of the brave people continues. If we are all united, if the freedom-loving people are united, no conspiracy will come to fruition, God willing."
The BNP acting chairman prayed for God's mercy for all the martyrs and injured in the movement to establish democracy and the movement to overthrow the fascist government.
Tarique Rahman said, "Recently, the oppression and rape of women and children have increased alarmingly in terms of violence and rape." Half of the country's population is women... It is impossible to move the country forward by leaving them insecure. There is a need to think deeply about whether the security of our mothers, sisters and daughters is in crisis due to the government, administration and law enforcement agencies being more focused on creating new political settlements or any other work.
He further said, we would like to draw the attention of the interim government to say that if the extremist population and the defeated fascist evil forces fail to control the evil activities of religious extremists, they will once again create the grave of democracy in the country. On the other hand, Bangladesh may face an image crisis in the democratic world. In order to uphold the country's non-communal democratic character, along with resisting the evil activities of religious extremists, the democratic rule of law in Bangladesh will be strengthened by bringing the fugitive mafia gangs responsible for genocide to justice at any cost.
Jatiya Party (Kazi Jafar) Chairman Mustafa Jamal Haider, Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gana Sanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Jonayed Saki, and Gana Adhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Noor spoke at the discussion moderated by BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku.
