UN Secretary-General
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that reducing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya will lead to a terrible disaster. People will suffer, people will die.
He made these remarks while addressing the Rohingya on the occasion of the Ramadan Solidarity Tour at an Iftar ceremony with 100,000 Rohingyas at Camp Extension No. 20 in Ukhiya on Friday (March 14) evening.
He said, we are standing on the brink of a deep humanitarian crisis. Due to the funding crisis, only 40% of the assistance will be available in 2025 compared to 2024. This will be a terrible disaster - people will suffer, people will die. The international community must take action now. It is our responsibility to help those who are most affected by this crisis.
At the same time, he added, the assistance for the refugees was not enough, and now we are facing a terrible budget crisis. UN agencies and various humanitarian and development agencies are facing a serious funding crisis. This will directly affect people's food, medical care and basic services. Every refugee in this camp is dependent on humanitarian assistance. Cox's Bazar is at the heart of a budget crisis. Funding cuts here mean human suffering and death.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the final solution must be found in Myanmar. We will never give up until the Rohingya can return to their homeland in safety, dignity and voluntarily. Now is the time for the international community to take responsibility. Solidarity with the Rohingya refugees is needed now more than ever – just as solidarity with Bangladesh is needed.
Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser, has pledged to work with the UN to ensure that the Rohingya can celebrate Eid next year in their own country, Rakhine, Myanmar. He said this in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after an iftar with 100,000 Rohingya. Yunus spoke in the regional language of Chattogram to better connect with the Rohingya.
