Dhaka University students staged demonstration late at night demanding the resignation of Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

The students started the protest procession from Halpara at around 1:10 am on Sunday (February 23).

They staged the protest, alleging that the law and order situation has deteriorated drastically across the country.

At that time, the students raised various slogans including 'One two three four - Jahangir vacates the throne', 'Point one demand one - Jahangir's resignation', 'Martyr's blood - cannot go in vain', 'Abu Sayeed Mugdha - the war is not over'.

The protest procession started from Halpara and ended at Muhsin Hall, VC premises and Raju Sculpture. The students addressed a short rally at the end of the procession.

At this time, a strict program was announced if the Home Affairs Adviser did not resign by Monday afternoon.

A gold merchant named Anwar Hossain (43) was shot and robbed of 200 bhari gold and Tk. one lakh in cash in the Banasree area of Rampura police station in the capital.

The incident took place in front of house number 20, Road No. 7, D Block, Banasree at around 10:30 pm on Sunday (February 23).

Later, locals rescued him with the bullet-injured condition at around 12 am and took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital(DMCH).

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura police station Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand confirmed the matter.

In this regard, Rampura police station-duty officer Md. Mohsin said, "A police patrol team went to the spot after hearing about a person blocking the road being shot in the hand and foot. The OC and senior officials are there. The victim is said to be a gold merchant.’

Earlier, the incident took place in front of house number 20 on Banasree D Block 7 Road around 10:30 pm on Sunday. At that time, residents recorded the robbery and shooting scene on their mobile phones from a nearby building. It went viral on social media that night.

The video shows three men getting off a motorcycle and trying to snatch a bag from businessman Anwar. He did not let go of the bag. At one point in the scuffle, one of them shot him. Later, they snatched the bag and fled on a motorcycle.

 The relatives of the injured Anwar said that Anwar had 200 gold ornaments and Tk. one lakh in cash in his bag. They believe that the miscreants followed him from the shop. Then, as soon as they reached in front of his house, they snatched the gold and money.

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General(Rtd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury  said Awami League's friends are trying to destabilize the country. I will make those who are trying to destabilize the country's life miserable. They will have no place anywhere day or night.

He said, we will make arrangements so that terrorists cannot stand anywhere. I have told all the forces that they will strengthen patrolling activities.

The adviser said these things at an emergency press conference at his residence in Baridhara DOHS at 3:05 am on Sunday (February 23).

The Home Affairs Adviser said, Awami League's friends are creating an unstable situation in the country. They are spending a lot of money. They will be resisted. Law enforcement agencies are vigilant. I hope the situation will improve from tomorrow (Monday).

He said, "From tomorrow, the patrolling of law enforcement agencies will increase. Action will be taken wherever incidents occur. No one will be spared. If any negligence is found by the law enforcement agencies, action will be taken against them. We will not spare the Awami League's friends in any way."

The government has declared February 25 as 'Jatiya Shaheed Sena Dibash'.

The announcement was made through a circular issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday (February 23).

Earlier, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid told the media that a notification will be issued today to declare February 25 as 'Jatiya Shahid Sena Dibash'. The day will be observed from this year. However, there will be no government holiday on this day.

On February 25, 2009, 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the Peelkhana massacre in the capital. The government decided to issue a notification declaring the day as 'Jatiya Shaheed Sena Dibash' to observe the day on a national basis.
