The first protest against subjugation is Ekushey. The first hour of awakening in the closed life of oppressed Bengalis throughout the ages is Ekushey. The seed mantra of immortal Ekushey is Bengali consciousness: The vanguard of the political campaign of greater nationalism in the tradition of language and culture and the eternal foundation of the secular, liberal Bengali state of Bangladesh.
On the historic day of Ekushey, in the year 1952, the inscription to protect the dignity of the Bengali language was written in bloody letters. The entire nationhood shone with the burning flame. The subsequent history of Bengalis was illuminated by the glory of extreme self-sacrifice. The name of the curtain-episode of that anecdote that began on Ekushey is Bangladesh.
Ekushey is not just a blood-stained date in history. A glorious and beautiful day. Continuously active in parallel with the national history of Bengalis. Constantly moving. Vibrant and significant. The motto of an indestructible spirit of the nation.
The consciousness of Ekushey was born in a united effort of the Bengali nation. Ekushey was born in a historical context and the sequence of the historical context of Bengalis was born in the womb of Ekushey. The long journey of ethnic, social and cultural development inherent in the period of Ekushey. The belief in liberating the existence and destiny of Bengalis. The determination to end the artificial, imposed and communal state system.
In, the then Pakistan, although 56 percent of the people spoke Bengali, the Pakistani ruling class was involved in a conspiracy to make Urdu the state language. In 1948, it was announced that Urdu would be the only state language. The brave Bengalis of East Bengal roared in protest. The protests that demanded the Bengali language to be made the state language gradually intensified between 1949 and 1952, establishing the status of the Bengali language and transforming it into a political movement for independence and ensuring the independence of Bangladesh. As a result, there is an indomitable desire to protest among the Ekushey. For this reason, on February 21, 1952, the 'National Language Day' and a general strike were observed demanding the state language, Bengali. The students broke Section 144 in an organized manner. They fought against the police firing. Salam, Rafiq, Jabbar, Barkat and many others who are unknown were martyred. The whole of East Bengal erupted in protest. The next day, the Shaheed Minar was built in memory of the martyrs after staying up all night. When the police demolished it, the Shaheed Minar was built again. This Shaheed Minar is a symbol of the mourning, struggle and oath of the Ekushey and the driving force of the non-communal, democratic, progressive and nationalist movement of the Bengalis.
Through the historic language movement of 1952, the Bengali nation was reborn and the consciousness of Ekushey was created, which is the seed mantra of self-sacrifice in the national life of Bengalis. The driving force of every subsequent mass movement. The first organized struggle of the deprived Bengalis. The beginning of the self-awareness and self-identity of Bengalis.
The seed mantra of Bengali consciousness, Amar Ekushey, is multidimensional and versatile and is a bridge between history and the future. Ekushey is radiant in the struggle, achievements, glory and brilliance of Bengalis. We Bengalis pronounce Ekushey by subduing narrow-mindedness, superstition, communalism and religious fanaticism. We embrace the national history, art-literature-culture of Bengalis, including all the beautiful arts and classical monuments. Ekushey is the patriotic orientation of our language, literature, culture and politics.
Since 1953, while celebrating Shaheed Dibash, the then progressive activists have been carrying out programs such as hoisting black flags, walking barefoot, placing wreaths at the graves of martyrs and at the Shaheed Minar, singing Ekushey songs in a collective voice during the morning walk, and painting Alpana at the Shaheed Minar. These programs are symbols of the renaissance of the national consciousness of Bengalis and are part of their cultural heritage.
Ekushey is immortal, inexhaustible and unfading. The seed mantra of Bengali consciousness, Ekushey, is the eternal charioteer of Bengal and Bengalis. The ever-elevated Ekushey, the call to move forward with the flag of Ekushey consciousness, resonates in the hearts of every Bengali, in the center and at every corner of Bangladesh.
