BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, we will not decide which party will be banned, which party will work, which party will not work. The people will decide which party will exist or not, which party will hold elections or not.
He told reporters after a meeting with British Charge d'Affaires in Dhaka James Goldman at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Thursday (February 13) afternoon.
At this time, Mirza Fakhrul said, we have been saying repeatedly that the people will decide. We are a liberal democratic party, we believe in democracy. We trust all the norms and conditions of democracy; we have practiced them in the past as well. That is how we think, we will not decide which party will be banned, which party will work, which party will not work. The people will decide which party will remain or not, which party will elect or not.
When asked whether BNP is in favor of the ban in the executive order, the BNP Secretary General said, I have made this matter clear, the people will decide. Whether I am in favor or not is immaterial, the people will decide.
Regarding Jamaat's demand for proportional elections in the Election Commission, he said, "We are strongly opposed to proportional elections, very strongly opposed. We will not support any system of proportional elections because the people here are not used to it."
Regarding Jamaat's demand for local elections before the national elections, he further said, "We do not agree with this either. These are nothing but taking the country to a more fragile state from a political perspective. The sooner the elections are held, the easier politics will be. The people of Bangladesh will come to a state of stability."
In response to a question about Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus's visit to the Ayena Ghar, the BNP Secretary General said, "I see this issue differently." I don't want to say which party is responsible for the disappearances and killings. Here, people of Bangladesh have been killed; people of Bangladesh have disappeared. We have been saying these things since the beginning. When Al-Jazeera first reported it, the government completely denied it. But it has been like this since the beginning.
Regarding the UN report, he said, we are relieved that the truth has been revealed. The problem is that when the UN says it, we believe it, when we say it, many political parties don't want to believe it. We will thank the UN monitoring committee for coming; thank them for making the report correctly.
Stating that these incidents happened on the orders of the fascist Hasina, all the killings that happened were on her orders, this important BNP leader said, all the human rights violations happened on her orders. The destruction of democracy, the destruction of institutions, all this happened on her orders, it has come up in the report. It has been proven that Hasina is a fascist, she committed genocide, tortured people.
Today, we want the Indian government to return her to the Bangladesh government. She and those who were with her will be brought to justice. That is our expectation, he said.
Regarding the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul said, they discussed with us the current political situation in Bangladesh, the steps taken by the current government, our relations with other countries and when the elections will be held.
Also present at the time was the party's organizing secretary Shama Obaid.
