DU suspends 128 students for attacks on July protesters

Dhaka: The University administration has suspended 128 students of Dhaka University who were involved in attacks on protesters from July 15 to August 5 during the student-public uprising.

At an emergency meeting of the syndicate on Monday (March 17) the decision was taken in light of the report of the fact-finding committee regarding the attacks during the July protests.

After the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan confirmed the matter.

The expelled students are said to be involved in the politics of the banned organization Chhatra League. However, their names and identities could not be known immediately.

When asked, DU Proctor Assistant Professor Saifuddin Ahmed told the media that the University has temporarily suspended 128 students and has formed an investigation committee headed by syndicate member Professor Dr. Tajmeri S Islam. Later, a final decision will be taken on the basis of the investigation committee's report.

Earlier on Thursday (March 13), the convener of the inquiry committee and associate professor of the University's law department, Kazi Mahfuzul Islam, handed over the investigation report to the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan. The report also revealed that many former students were involved in the attacks. Considering the scale of the crime, the report recommended canceling their academic certificates.

A press release issued by the inquiry committee said that the worst part of the attack on July 15, 2024 was the attack on female students, the attack on injured students on their way to the emergency department of Dhaka University Medical Center and Dhaka Medical College. In addition, the injured were attacked inside the emergency department and their treatment was prevented.
