Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma said that New Delhi is willing to work with the interim government of Bangladesh maintaining friendly relations.

He said this in response to a question from journalists at the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday (December 3) at 4:45 pm.

The Indian High Commissioner said that there is no reason for the relations of the two countries to be stuck over one incident. Bangladesh and India have multidimensional relations. We are interested in increasing people-to-people contacts between the two countries.

Earlier, Bangladesh summoned Pranay Verma to protest the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala. Later, he held a meeting at the office of Acting Foreign Secretary M Riaz Hamidullah.

Yesterday, Monday, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises were attacked in North Agartala in the northeastern state of Tripura. The attack was carried out by supporters of Hindutva organization Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, including several organizations, alleging persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. Hundreds of people protested near the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai today, organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Hindu Sangharsh Samiti is an affiliate of the VHP.

In a statement on Monday, India's Ministry of External Affairs said that the vandalism of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises in Agartala is very unfortunate. Diplomatic and consular property should not be targeted under any circumstances.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the incident and said that during the protest procession, some youths tried to enter the office of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission. I condemn this incident. Peaceful protests can be held, but such behavior is unacceptable.

Indian law enforcement agencies have already arrested seven people in this incident. In addition, three Tripura police personnel have been suspended for negligence of duty.

West Tripura Police SP Kiran Kumar was quoted by PTI as saying that the police have registered a case in the New Capital Complex police station in Agartala in this incident. The police have already started an investigation and will take action as per the law.
